Our Shelter

The Humane Society of Durham Region was incorporated in 1988 under the name Durham Animal Welfare. We then became an independent operating affiliate of the Ontario S.P.C.A. under the new name Humane Society of Durham Region (HSDR).

HSDR is made up of a Volunteer Board of Directors, staff members and volunteers. We are a community resource, dedicated to protecting and providing temporary shelter and comfort to all companion animals in need, while promoting adoptions and re-homing for unwanted, abused, neglected and abandoned pets. HSDR promotes humane treatment of all living things and works with the OSPCA who respond to and investigate all complaints of cruelty and neglect.HSDR serves all of Durham Region and is a non-profit organization and no-kill shelter and does not receive government funding. We rely solely on the contributions of our donors and supporters in order to provide care and a home for the animals.

Our Mission

To provide compassionate care for abused, abandoned, and neglected animals in our community while they await their new beginning in life.

Our Vision

To provide care until a new home is found regardless of the time it takes, educate and inspire responsible pet/family relationships, and to work with like-minded community groups to the best of our ability.

Integrity - Respect - Honesty - Compassion
